Halloween Is Getting Bigger Every Year. Here's Where Signmakers Fit In

SIGNAGE | RETAIL | DISPLAY

Halloween used to be a non-event in Australia. But not anymore. Aussies are tipped to spend around $500 million specifically on Halloween costumes, decorations and treats this year, with the average spend per person climbing past $100, up over 10% on last year alone. Zoom out and it's bigger still: ANZ is forecasting customers will spend $2.32 billion in total during Halloween week itself, as retailers, cafes, bars and entertainment venues all cash in on the seasonal traffic.

It's not just kids either, participation among older Australians has jumped hard, and businesses across retail, hospitality and events are all leaning into it as a proper seasonal trading period, right up there with Christmas and Easter in terms of decorating budget.

For signmakers, that's a category worth chasing, because every business getting into the spirit needs someone to dress the space. Here's where the jobs are hiding.

Retail window takeovers

Retailers know a spooky window stops foot traffic and with a lot of brands doing specials and releasing special Halloween lines and march, this is a lucrative time. Think full window graphics, static clings, silhouette cutouts, cobweb effects, all temporary, all needing to come down clean in November without a mark on the glass. This is a short-turnaround category: briefs land, installs happen fast, and the client wants it gone by the first week of November.

Shopping centre and mall activations

Centre management teams run Halloween trails, photo zones and "spooky spot" activations to pull families in during a traditionally quiet shopping period. That means directional signage, oversized props, floor graphics for trails, and branded backdrops for the inevitable photo opportunities.

Hospitality and events

Bars, breweries and function venues run Halloween nights as one of their biggest trading events outside Christmas. They need everything from A-frame street signage to interior decor panels, bar wraps, and themed backdrops for social content. Corporate offices are increasingly doing the same for internal parties, smaller jobs, but they add up and they repeat every year.

Council and community events

Trick-or-treat trails, street parties and family festival days are becoming more common, especially in suburban and regional areas. These need wayfinding, safety signage, banners and entry markers, usually on a tighter budget, but often with a local government client who's happy to be a repeat customer.

Why it's worth building a Halloween offer

The real opportunity here isn't the one big spooky job, it's that Halloween now behaves like a recurring seasonal category. The businesses ordering signage this October are the same ones who'll order for Christmas six weeks later, then Easter, then Halloween again next year. Getting in early with a simple "Halloween signage" offer, even just a few pre-configured product options, puts you in front of that repeat buyer before your competitors think to ask.
