Creating Decorative Effects in Signage and Retail
Creating Decorative Effects in Signage and Retail

SIGNAGE | RETAIL | DECORATIVE
Decorative finishes have become a useful way to add another dimension to signage and branded environments. Rather than relying entirely on printed colour or graphics, the finish itself can contribute to the visual identity of a space.
Metallics, gloss finishes and frosted effects can be used to create contrast, introduce texture or give a relatively simple application more visual depth. They're particularly effective in retail and commercial interiors, where signage often needs to work alongside an existing interior design rather than simply carry information.
There are several ways to achieve these effects, depending on the look and application.

Metallic Finishes
Metallic Finishes
Metallic effects are an effective way to introduce contrast without necessarily introducing another colour.
Brushed and mirror finishes can create different levels of reflection and visual movement, while metallic surfaces can work particularly well alongside flat colours and simple graphics. Used selectively, they can highlight a particular element rather than turning the entire application into a metallic finish.
For retail, this can work across feature walls, branded panels, display elements and statement signage. In commercial interiors, metallic finishes can add definition to directional signage or branded elements while keeping the overall palette restrained.
Product to consider: PROBOND Decor®
PROBOND Decor® is a 3mm aluminium composite panel with a 0.30mm aluminium skin, available in decorative finishes including brushed metallic and mirror metallic. The panel can be folded and CNC routed, allowing the finish to be incorporated into fabricated elements as well as flat signage.

High Gloss Effects
Gloss is another way to create contrast without changing the underlying graphic treatment.
A high-gloss finish can give solid colours and branding a sharper, more polished appearance, particularly when used against surrounding matte surfaces. It can also be used to create subtle differentiation between areas of a larger graphic or panel.
For permanent retail and corporate applications, a durable gloss vinyl provides an alternative to producing the decorative effect through a separate substrate or fabrication process.
The approach is particularly useful when the objective is to transform an existing surface while retaining the flexibility of cut vinyl, whether that's a branded panel, window graphic, equipment surface or other signage application.
Product to consider: Mactac MACal 9800 PRO
Mactac MACal 9800 PRO is a 66μ high-gloss polymeric PVC vinyl designed for high-performance permanent marking applications. It offers an extensive colour range, with an outdoor durability of up to 10 years for black and white and 8 years for colours, making it suited to long-term decorative as well as traditional signage applications.

Frosted and Etched Effects
Frosted and Etched Effects
Frosted finishes offer a different approach, particularly across glass.
Rather than treating a window purely as a space for graphics, frosting can become part of the architectural or retail treatment. It can provide visual separation, introduce privacy and create a decorative layer while retaining light transmission.
There is also considerable scope in how the effect is used. Full coverage creates a very different result to a partial treatment, pattern or combination of frosted and clear areas. Printed elements can also be incorporated where branding needs to sit within the decorative treatment.
The result can sit comfortably between signage and interior design, particularly in offices, retail spaces and commercial environments where glazing forms a significant part of the visual landscape.
Product to consider: Supatac STV700 Silver Frosted Etchmark Vinyl
Supatac STV700 uses a satin silver surface with metallic pigments to create a refined frosted effect with a balance of translucency and reflectivity. The polymeric 75μ vinyl is designed for medium to long-term window applications and is also printable with solvent, eco-solvent and UV inks, allowing decorative treatments to be combined with graphics.
Combining Finishes
The most interesting decorative treatments don't necessarily rely on a single effect.
Combining a metallic panel with printed graphics, introducing gloss elements into an otherwise matte design, or using frosted and clear areas within the same window treatment can create hierarchy without adding visual clutter.
This is particularly relevant for branded environments where the objective isn't simply to make signage more noticeable. Different finishes can be used to establish emphasis, distinguish brand elements or create continuity between signage, displays and the wider interior.
The same principle applies to fabricated signage. A decorative panel can provide the base finish, while CNC-cut details, folded elements or applied graphics introduce another layer to the finished piece.
This is where material selection becomes part of the design process rather than simply a production decision.
